Hello all,
Sorry if this is the wrong forum - I have a query on SilkPerformer.
My application is a backup and recovery software which supports backup of
various kinds of data - files, databases, exchange servers etc.
it is a client-server application and we make one machine as a backup
server and install backup agent on all other machines in the LAN
The software requires VC++ runtime (mandatory) and .NET framework
2.0(optional) to run. I want to test the performance of this application and
here is my requirement:
a) Time taken to backup data by backup server from 5,50,100,500. ..machines
(assuming I backup 1 GB of data from each of the machines)
b) Throughput of the backup job - MB/Min.
c) Monitor CPU and memory utilization while the backup is in progress for
any memory leaks
My query - Is it possible to test for this performance scenario using
SilkPerformer?
Thanks in anticipation,
Vivek Sharma

whats the protocol your application uses ? I mean as how exactly is done ?
is it done through FTP Protocol or through HTTP ?
Remember most of the Load testing tools works with protocol rather than
technologies used.
whats your objectives here,is it possible to have more than one instance of
your agent per machine ?
SilkPerformer can be used for client server application but you need to
understand that efforts required will be more in case protocol is not
supporting completely or properly.

Thanks for your response!

*The application uses TCP/IP for communicaiton between backup server and
clients*
[moderator's note: TCP/IP is not a protocol, it's the an entire
technology. See http://en.wikipedia .org/wiki/ TCP/IP. The answer to
this question and the others requires me to add the performance
testing FAQ. Please see below.]

Remember most of the Load testing tools works with protocol rather than
technologies used.
whats your objectives here,is it possible to have more than one instance of
your agent per machine ?
*No...All clients will have a single agent installed. The objective is to
measure the time taken by backup server to backup data from*
*a) 5 clients*
*b) 50 clients*
*c) 500 clients and so on...*

SilkPerformer can be used for client server application but you need to
understand that efforts required will be more in case protocol is not
supporting completely or properly.
*I understand and am trying to find out if SilkPerfromer would support
testing for my scenario in some way.*

Thanks,
Vivek

Mostly likely you are will playing binaries, also you need to select tcp/ip based protocol in SP.remember its real pain to work with tcp/ip based protocol or solutions.you can also think of using framework based solutions in SP.Have a look of .net explorer in SP.
Do you have formal training in SP ?
